More than a half century ago, a unique and relatively obscure chapter of Naval Aviation - that of seaplane operations from battleships and cruisers - passed into history. Before its demise at the end of World War II, this unique branch of the United States Navy performed a yeoman's job for our armed forces. Well before aircraft carriers matured into their present form, battleship and cruiser-based aircraft served in a most critical role as the 'eyes of the fleet'. Missions included spotting gunfire for the ship's main and secondary batteries, long range scouting, bombing, strafing, air-sea rescue, target towing, flying mail, and anti-submarine patrol. Although battleship/cruiser aviation (VO/VCS) did but few of these tasks well, its ability to do them all made it a valuable adjunct to the armed forces. Most cruisers had a complement of four seaplanes. Battleships had but three, as the cruiser-based aircraft enjoyed the luxury of being stored in an enclosed onboard hangar, much to the joy of the ship's aircraft maintenance personnel. Having no such hangar onboard, battleship seaplanes were exposed to the elements full time.
