Tiny Isla Contadora is located some 30mi (50km) off Panama's Pacific coast. Part of the Archipielago de las Perlas or Islas de las Perlas (Pearl Islands archipelago), named after the great quantities of gems harvested here in centuries past, Contadora ('the accounted) was where the pearls were counted before being shipped off to the mainland and beyond. Much more recently, 'The 'Pearls' were the filming location for three seasons of the popular CBS television series Survivor. Today, tourism is the main source of income for the island group, of which Contadora is among the smallest yet the one with the most convenient links to Panama City. It is also a year-round vacation spot for the rich and famous, such as Christian Dior and singer Julio Iglesias, who have built impressive mansions. When the Shah of Iran had to flee following the Islamic Revolution, he lived on Contadora Island for a few months.
