"Thank God you're alright. Thank Cod you're alright." I'd just stepped out of the shower and started shaving using shampoo from a mini bottle. My travel kit had run out of the real stuff the night before in another city. I was losing the battle of wiping the steam from the mirror when my cellphone began ringing. I had a towel wrapped around my waist and I looked at the clock to decide how much time I had to talk as I was answering. The hotel van was scheduled to take me to the airport with my crew in less than 30 minutes when my former girlfriend Kelly uttered those words through short breaths. "'Killer', what's up?" I asked, using the nickname given by her dad. I think she was a fearless child and her father was sure her unbridled enthusiasm for life was going to give him a heart attack before she grew up. They both survived. She'd become an advertising VP and lived in Midtown Manhattan. Killer and I were no longer romantically involved, but still good friends. What we had tried relationship-wise was strained by long distance. I lived in St Louis, Missouri, although I was in Portland, Oregon, at the moment.
