George E Gardner, president of Northeast, immediately recognized the aircraft's potential and flew to London on the returning Britannia to discuss a purchase. With the award of Florida route authority in September, subject to confirmation several weeks later, on December 3, 1956, Northeast announced its order for five Series 305s, plus options for two more. The 92-seat all-first class aircraft were scheduled for delivery in time to enter service over the Florida routes in the fall peak season the following year, in competition withEastern and National's piston-engine equipment. How would NEA pay for the Britannias? Well, certainly the money would come pouring in once Florida service was inaugurated.Northeast was ready. Unfortunately, Bristol Aircraft was not. The Britannia had first flown in 1952 and it had taken all of the years since to work out the bugs. There were serious problems with icing, which caused flame-outs of the Proteus turbines.
