摘要

WHILE CLEARING my desk during our editorial year-end office sweep, I started thinking about which of this year's issues has meant the most to me. After narrowing my search down to three, I can easily say that the 'Painting an Aircraft' feature on the February issue takes the number-one spot. Spots two and three go to the striking 'Flying Through HEL' cover on the May issue, and the venerable DC-3 shot on the September cover. Talking about the DC-3, I just had one of the most memorable aviation enthusiast experiences of my life. Our Airways Spot & Greet event in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, was a complete success. We were able to charter a pristine, 1940-built Douglas DC-3 for three sightseeing flights around the beautiful Cape Cod, at altitudes as low as 700ft and as high as 3,000ft. Our gracious Pilots not only showed us some of the most magnificent sceneries the United States has to offer, but also performed an ultra-low 135kt fly-by over the grass runway at Cape Cod Airport (2B1), giving our spectators the chance to picture the impressive 77-year-old aircraft doing what it does best, fly! We were blessed to spend the first day at the beautiful airfield but, on the next morning, we hopped on a boat out to sea for a unique whale watching tour. Our guests were able to see humpback whales feeding and coming up to the surface. And, when the sunlight vanished, we returned to the hotel to enjoy a presentation by our one and only Clay Taylor, who shared with us some of the bizarre occurrences from his many years 'on the road.' I have been asked to repeat this DC-3 event for next year. We do have lots of plans in store for you but, if you have any suggestions on unique AvGeek adventures, please let us know by contacting our office at airways@airwaysmag.com. In the meantime, take advantage of the best possible prices for our next Airways Cruise, which is scheduled to depart to the island of St. Maarten from the port of Miami in January 2019. We want to see you there, supporting this beautiful island, which was heavily damaged by hurricane Irma. Lastly, note that our Photo Competition vote will begin on December 1. You will have to log on to airwaysmag.com/photocompetition and vote for your favorite shot of the year. I would like to thank all of you for your continued support, month after month. Our magazine wouldn't exist without you. I wish you all a happy ending of this 2017, hoping that the next year will bring many more aviation surprises, happiness, and joy to the big Airways family.
