While it is essentially a technical explanation of the accident to Air France flight 447 on June 1, 2009, this book is a riveting read. The chapter detailing the cockpit voice recording is absolutely chilling. You will find yourself begging the crew to push the control stick forward. The author reveals how lesson number one in instrument flying-power + attitude = performance-is so often lost in the complexity of modern flight and has to be drilled into student pilots' heads time and again. Discussing the limitations of digital flight instrument displays, and how the crew must understand degraded modes and remember the basics of flight to get to the middle of the flight envelope, Palmer illustrates how the addition of fly-by-wire flight controls further complicates a situation when things go bad. With easy to follow explanations he shows what every computer programmer has known for years: if you give a computer a pre-programmed command it will execute it whether that is what the operator really wants or not.
