DFW was the world's largest, and its architectural design, conceived late in the 1960s, remains unique. Five semi-circular terminals (originally there were four) are grouped on both sides of a highway serving as an axis, with the seven runways also divided by the axis. The farsighted original plan allowed for expansion up to a total of 11 runways and 13 terminals with 260 gates. That is unthinkable even 40 years later, despite the Texans' love of super-size. "We are utilizing only 60 to 65 percent of our current capacity", Steven Tobey, assistant VP airfield operations, tells Airways.
