While reading 'Rotary Wings over US Cities' (May 2013) my attention was drawn to the mention of the New York Airways accident on May 16, 1977, on the roof of the Pan Am Building. I was working for the New York City Fire Department at the time and responded with Eng Co 26 to the incident. While en route we were redirected to the intersection of Madison Avenue and 43rd Street for a woman 'hit by a car'. On arrival we found a large group of people surrounding a woman laying on the sidewalk with a massive head injury. Next to her was a jagged chunk of metal which turned out to be part of the rotor of the helicopter that broke apart on the roof of the Pan Am Building. There were five fatalities, four on the roof and the woman on Madison Avenue.
