American Airlines began a new era in air travel when it introduced the DST (Douglas Sleeper Transport)/DC-3 in 1936. Not only did the new Douglas airliner introduce reliable and comfortable air travel, it made carrying passengers profitable (as opposed to flying mail). Manufactured in Santa Monica, Flagship Detroit (NC17334) was delivered to American Airlines in March 1937 as the 24th of what would become a prewar fleet of 82 DC-3s.
