WORLD WAR Ⅱ tested the mettle of America's airlines and, like other companies, Delta met the challenge admirably. During the conflict, the company flew 1,974,662 miles in service to the Air Transport Command (ATC), modified 916 aircraft for the armed forces, overhauled 1,115 engines, 243 propellers, and 194 aircraft instruments for the Air Service Command at Warner-Robins Field south of Macon, and trained 123 Pilots in airline methods for the ATC, along with 225 Army Mechanics. Delta did all of this while continuing to operate its commercial service, albeit on a reduced schedule, with four DC-3s during the early part of the war, and with a fifth released from military service in August 1943.
