ON NOVEMBER 21,1986, a Boeing 0737-3Q8 registered as EC-EA departed from London-Gatwick Airport (LGW) bound for Tenerife South (TFS) in Spain. It was the first flight of Air Europa (UX). Since that first trip over the English Channel, the airline has never stopped taking to the skies. Thirty-three years later, Air Europa is Spain's third-largest airline. The company was established in 1984 as Air Espana. Its start-up capital was 400 million pesetas (USD$2.5 million), 75% subscribed by Spanish banks BBV and BCB and the other 25% by International Leisure Group (ILG), the tourism corporation owned by British businessman Harry Goodman, a pioneer of the low-cost package holiday in Europe. ILG's participation not only put Air Europa in Goodman's Airlines of Europe' group, but also established a close cooperation with the pan-European low-cost carrier Air Europe (AE), sharing not only a common livery but also jointly managing seasonal capacities to achieve an optimal fleet utilization all year round.
