TODAY, AFTER retiring from commercial aviation, she is flying a privately-owned jet, doing what she loves-minus a dozen Flight Attendants! Airways: Did you always want to be a Pilot and what was your career path to becoming one? Beverley Bass: I cannot remember a time in my life when I was not obsessed with airplanes. When I was eight years old, I announced to my parents that I wanted to be a Pilot. I was a civilian, as women were not permitted in the military as Pilots in the early 1970s. I got all of my licenses and ratings starting in 1971. I flew bodies for a mortician, was a Flight Instructor, flew for two corporations, and then flew night freight out of Dallas Love Field. It took me approximately five years before American Airlines hired me.
