Believe it or not, I've heard controllers clear airplanes for takeoff and then un-key their microphone and say, "I think." But it's understandable. I mean, there's a lot of stuff going on in the tower; lots of places to look.rnThe controller working local control is the person who clears an airplane for takeoff or landing. I'd be willing to bet there are quite a few pilots out there who would be surprised to learn the only thing the local controller is responsible for is the separation of airplanes on the concrete itself.
