Legendary pilot Bert Mercer, the first Kiwi to achieve 10,000 flying hours, created New Zealand's first licensed airline that flew scheduled service. This operated from Hokitika to Haast on the scenic West Coast of the South Island from December 1934, initially using the de Havilland D.H.83 Fox Moth. The company also pioneered air mail, air ambulance, alpine tourist flying, and versatile freight work.rnSix well-designed chapters tell the vivid story of the world's longest running de Havilland biplane air service, which lasted until 1967 under the subsequent management of National Airways Corporation and West Coast Airways.
