"Mayday, mayday, mayday!" Those are words no air traffic controller ever wants to hear, but one night it happened to me. At three in the morning.rnThe aircraft, a night freighter under my control, had just begun its descent in the inky blackness far out over a cold, dark sea when that fateful call burst from the radio. In the concise manner common to the airways, yet with an edge of panic evident in his voice, the pilot reported that he had lost control of the aircraft and that he was plunging rapidly toward the water some 25,000ft (7.5km) below.
