A few years ago my family and I were returning from our annual visit to Australia. We had purchased roundtrip tickets from Los Angeles to Brisbane, Queensland. After several weeks Down Under we were now attempting to return to our home in Anchorage, Alaska. Our journey had begun at 0700 on a sunny Sunday as we made our way to Brisbane's international terminal. After a stopover in Nadi, Fiji, we continued to LAX, where we arrived early in the morning. Clearing immigration and customs, we made our way to Terminal 3. To reduce expenses we had elected to 'non-rev' (using free employee and family travel benefits on a standby basis) between Anchorage and LAX. On the outbound journey all four of us had made it with no problems, and early indications were that it should be OK returning as well. However, when checking the passenger loads upon our arrival at LAX, the computer painted a bleak picture. All flights from LAX to Seattle, Washington-our transit point en route to Anchorage-were full, with one exception. There was a departure in a few minutes that had some empty seats.
