Blimps have visited the Bay Area on a regular basis for many years, wearing a variety of advertising banners, but this is the first rigid airship to do so since the ill-fated USS Macon, lost in the Pacific Ocean in February 1935. Both the Blimps and the Zeppelin use non-flammable helium gas for lift, as compared to the hydrogen used in early airships such as the Hindenburg, which was destroyed in a fatal conflagration in New Jersey in 1937.
