While working a bunch of inbounds, I suddenly realized I was running out of room. I was thinking that if I didn't do something soon airplanes would end up on a 25mi (40km) final. My choices were to tell my hand-off man to instruct the center controller to either give me a bigger gap with the inbound traffic, or shut 'em off altogether-neither of which was appealing. Besides, a lot of the traffic was VFR (Visual Flight Rules) and not descending out of the center's altitudes.rnCalling the tower, I asked if the local controller could take the traffic two miles in trail for the next ten minutes: three was considered the minimum. His response was, "Keep 'em coming." Ah, a man after my own heart. It was Dirk, he wasn't quite as young as I, but he was a pilot and just as enthusiastic about talking to airplanes. Our facility had a mix of young guys like me and some real old-timers, some of them were even in their fifties.
