As the De Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver floatplane is carefully pushed away from the dockside, its radial engine clatters into life. With a deep rumbling sound filling the cabin, the red bushplane slowly starts water-taxiing away from the seaplane base at the start of another flight over South Central Alaska's dramatic scenery. For the 'eager beaver' passengers, the sense of anticipation and excitement mounts as the 450hp (335kW) Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior engine is throttled up to takeoff power, sending vibrations through the cabin and enveloping the occupants in the sounds and sensations of round-engine power. Slowly, the heavily laden Beaver lifts off, leaving behind a trail of spray before banking away from its Lake Hood base and setting course toward the Chugach Range.
