British Aerospace (BAe)-which was created in April 1977-encompassed almost every revered name in British aviation history, plus others from overseas.The first new airplane type to bear the BAe name is the 146, first mooted in 1958 as a project of the de Havilland Aircraft Company. It underwent a succession of design changes-for turboprop and pure-jet airliners of varying configurations-from D.H. 123 through to D.H. 126 and 131, then (with the absorption of de Havilland into the Hawker Siddeley Group) the HS 136 and 144. Not until 1978, by which time HS had itself become part of the British Aerospace conglomerate, was the design for a four-engine jetliner; designated the BAe 146, launched.
