There was other exciting news from southern California in those heady days. On November 16, 1981, Jet America Airlines began service out of Long Beach to Chicago with factory-fresh MD-82s. At that time it was unusual for startups to launch with new equipment. Jet America's aircraft were delivered by simply towing them across the ramp from the Douglas plant. That proximity to the manufacturer afforded Jet America easy access to parts and expertise, and also resulted in lots of favorable press for the new airline flying the latest product of the city's most prominent and influential tenant.
