It was as though we had been summoned to assume perilous, surreptitious duty. Tones were hushed; glances our way were filled with a sort of disdain. Could it happen? Could these old men complete the mission? None of us really knew, because the central business of it had been made utterly Byzantine, convoluted, and absolutely bewildering.
