摘要

Part Two of this article (Airways, September 2007) ended as KE007 was flying westward, across the Sea of Okhotsk. In its wake, the flight had stirred up a hornet's nest. Kamchatka's Anti-Aircraft Defense Command (PVO) was both confused and embarrassed. The 'intruder', as the Soviets labeled the civilian Boeing 747 flying devious maneuvers, had slipped across Kamchatka Peninsula without being intercepted. In fact, it had passed only a few miles north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski and the USSR's atomic submarine pens at Avancha Bay, which provided year-round access to the Pacific Ocean. The first and second of three hurdles of KE007's Capt Chun Byung-in's apparent 'ferret7 mission were behind him. The third and most dangerous task—stirring up the Soviet defenses of Sakhalin Island—lay ahead.
