Ian started life in what was called Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). At the age of 18 he joined the Rhodesian Air Force, which was, at that time, fighting against communist-backed guerrillas who were trying to establish which tribe would take over when the colonial masters finally succumbed to the inevitable. When the warring factions resolved the issue, it was also decided that there was no room left for white people in the air force, so Ian had to go south. The South African Air Force (SAAF) recognized his qualifications and stuck him on the Mirage Ⅲ.
