For many years, commercial aviation in Guatemala was almost synonymous with Aviateca. A changing roster of smaller airlines flew some domestic routes, but none challenged the large flag-carrier. Today, Aviateca (formerly known as Empresa Guatemalteca de Aviacion and, earlier, Aerovias de Guatemala) has been swallowed into Grupo TACA (Airways, May 2003), which continues to dominate the country's airline scene. But a challenger has arisen, in the form of Tikal Jets Airlines.
