One evening late in July 1985, on the hot and steamy California Air Charter ramp at Burbank Airport, I was commiserating with a friend and fellow-pilot. He was lamenting the fact that, although he had found a small commuter airline that was hiring captains off the street, he had not been selected. It turned out that, for insurance reasons, this company needed pilots to have a certain amount of time in the Beech 99 before they could be placed in the left seat. This immediately piqued my interest because I was also Beech 99- qualified, with a little more time on type than ray colleague.
