I have a friend called Dan. He is a 'detribalized' American. Actually, when I describe him thus, that might—perhaps— be a shade misleading. Tribalized' would probably be more appropriate, because he has been living in Africa now for many years—in Johannesburg, South Africa, to be precise. The first time I met Dan, we were employed by competing companies but flying for the same client, a large British oil company that was looking for gas in the deserts of Algeria. Dan appeared as a rather gaunt, rangy individual with a scraggly, unkempt, pepper-and-salt beard, and kept himself to himself to the point of being a recluse. I misjudged Dan's attitude as being, frankly, unfriendly, not to say bad-mannered. However, I accepted the fact that it was possibly his response to a management directive not to associate with the 'enemy', as we would have been portrayed. My reaction was to ignore Dan whenever possible, and thus reinforce his management's perceived phobia, if we reluctantly came into contact.
