The story of the Douglas DC-8, which has been called the last great airplane', began in 1951. At that time, Cyrus R Smith—the American Airlines chief and long-standing friend of Donald Douglas Sr (Don Sr)—pressured the Santa Monica-based manufacturer to build a longer range version of the popular DC-6 series. Smith wanted to be able to fly nonstop across the USA westbound (against the prevailing winds), and Lockheed promised even greater performance from its Super Constellation.
