While airliners have come and gone over the years, there have scarcely been any large passenger terminal closures apart from instances where buildings are replaced in situ by newer ones or where the airport itself is relocated to a new larger site, as done in recent years at Munich [Muenchen] (Airways, Mar/Apr 1995), Oslo-Fornebu (Airways, February 1999), and Hong Kong (Airways, September 2004). Yet, with scarcely a whimper, Montreal's Mirabel Airport's spacious and serenely quiet passenger terminal was decommissioned late in 2004, nearly three decades after its grand opening. While Mirabel (IATA: YMX/ICAO: CYMX—Airways, December 1998) continues to function as a cargo airport, passenger operations were finally consolidated at the city's Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (IATA: YUL/ICAO: CYUL) in the Montreal suburb of Dorval—somewhat the way things were there before Mirabel's 1975 opening and Dorval's controversial renaming in honor of one of its rival's principal patrons.
