In the years immediately following World War Ⅱ, several major American steamship lines decided to take the bold and unprecedented step of going into the airline business. One such company was Waterman Steamship Corporation, founded in Mobile, Alabama in 1919. During the war, the line became the largest US seaborne flag-carrier, at one stage operating 125 vessels.
