The hibiscus blooms throughout the tropics, and nowhere more abundantly than in Malaysia, where it is the national flower. Flower-power took center-stage when the scarlet petals of a hibiscus (bunga raya in Bahasa Malay) were recently unfurled across the vast expanse of a Boeing 747-400's fuselage at Kuala Lumpur. The ceremonial unveiling was performed by Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on March 23, a day that marked the beginning of resurgence by Malaysia Airlines (MAS) in the very competitive skies of Asia. For some time, MAS (Airways, January 1999) has seen the migration of its premium customers to competitor carriers offering the latest in creature comforts. In an attempt to halt this defection, in mid-2004 MAS undertook a MYR700 million ($184.3 million) exercise-marketed as 'An Experience Redefined'—to introduce greater definition to its first and business class products.
