Not since the heady days over three decades ago has the sound of Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasps reverberated over the coral reefs of idyllic South Pacific islands on a regular basis. Amongst those still-Commonwealth although independent island nations is the Kingdom of Tonga, the oldest and only remaining Polynesian monarchy, nestling between Western Sampa to the north and the Fiji chain to the west. Both the latter nations retired their Douglas DC-3s from service—with Polynesian Airlines and Fiji Airways in October 1972 and June 1973, respectively—and entered the world of turbine power with the Hawker Siddeley (Avro) 748. At the time, it would have seemed unlikely, if not impossible, that the Polynesian DC-3 would return to its old stamping ground. But, truth often being stranger than fiction, that is exactly what happened.
