On a cold New Year's Eve afternoon 20 years ago a privately-owned Douglas DC-3 (registered N711Y) sustained an in-flight fire before crash-landing into a field at DeKalb, Texas. The airplane's wings sliced through telephone wires, a telephone pole, and ultimately smashed into trees. As the flaming wreckage ground to a halt, the two pilots kicked out their cockpit windows and tumbled to the ground below with serious burns. Seven persons trapped inside the inferno lost their lives. One of the victims was US rock-and-roll legend Ricky Nelson (45).
