Imagine an aircraft of such cavernous size that it could almost carry the 747's body inside its fuselage―and could lift the weight of a 747 and still have capacity to spare. Imagine an aircraft with six turbofan engines hanging from its wings. Is such an aircraft a dream? No. Well actually, yes. Antonov's An-225, named Mriya―Ukrainian for 'dream'―is very much a reality, and it is an aircraft unique in the aviation world. Over-zealous PR people often misapply the word 'unique', but in this case it is accurate: there is but one An-225 in airworthy condition in the world, So Airways went to the remote airfield deep in the heart of Ukraine to discover more. Long after passing the drab high-rise apartment blocks of Kiev, the visitor enters dense forest―an area where, in the Cold War days, the Soviet military's work could be done far beyond the eyes of prying outsiders. The Antonov plant is a sprawling complex with a slight air of decay, and is spread out alongside the firm's own Gostomel airfield. The company―now owned by the Ukrainian state―produces light rail trolleys (trams) and an array of transport and utility aircraft. "The Soviet Union asked us to build an airplane that was capable of carrying its Buran space shuttle from its landing site back to the launch pad, and also rocket stages," explains Anatoli G Boulanenko, Antonov's Deputy General Designer. He describes the challenge as "a most difficult problem," Yet it was one for which a solution had to be found.
