摘要

The year was 1974, and the most difficult thing I had undertaken up to that point in my life was the initial instrument flight-rating test. For a start, there was the extreme intimacy of the examination. Until then I had never had to prove to somebody sitting right next to me that I was fully capable of bringing an aeroplane down to within 200 feet of the ground, lined up with the centerline of a runway, without looking out of the window. All my previous tests had either been comparatively easy, or made at a sufficient distance from the examiner for the heat of his wrath to have dissipated by the time it reached me.
