I was flying Douglas DC-7Cs with British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) in 1960 when I received my promotion to command and, the following year, two out of the fleet of ten aircraft were converted to DC-7C/F freighters (Airways, January 2002). Consequently, most of my flights over the next two years were on freighters, and I became used to arriving for work at the freight terminal instead of the passenger terminal. We carried a wide variety of loads, ranging from dolphins, thoroughbred horses, rhesus monkeys (up to 1,000 at a time), wallabies, and heifers (50 on one occasion)―in the livestock range―to Grand Prix racing cars in the inanimate category.
