(Last month, Roger Eastman described his introduction to the world of 'non-sked' aviation, flying Curtiss C-46s for Universal Airlines, initially from the company's Willow Run, Michigan, base. He later took up a posting at NAS Norfolk, Virginia, on the Quicktrans contract operated by Universal on behalf of the US Navy. In this concluding installment, the writer continues his reminiscences of life with a non-sked carrier.) Universal Airlines did not lose any Curtiss C-46s while I was at NAS Norfolk, Virginia, but a Douglas DC-7 was written off. I was marginally involved, because one of my flights brought the captain and flight engineer back to Norfolk. All three crewmembers were uninjured. It was a strange accident, according to the engineer who told my captain and me about it as we waited for the DC-7 captain to show up. They were ferrying the DC-7 with one engine inoperative, with reverse thrust 'inop' on the other engine on the same side. During the pre-landing briefing, the crew discussed the need to limit reverse on the remaining engines, in order to avoid side loads on the landing gear. Captain Janos, a Hungarian, seemed to understand, and the engineer said he reminded Janos several times: "No reverse...no reverse."
