The links between Scotland and Norway were forged in the first millennium when Viking raiders and settlers made most of Scotland and the Scottish Isles a Norwegian province. Today, the principal connection lies beneath the bottom of the North Sea, the body of water that divides the two nations. When oil was discovered in these waters some 40 years ago, large-scale exploration for the 'black gold' began. Ties between the center of Scotland's oil exploration, Aberdeen, and the Norwegian oil town of Stavanger grew tighter and, early in the Seventies, Air UK (Airways, Mar/Apr 1994) launched the first aerial connection, and Widerae's Flyveselskap entered the market in 1999. When Air UK's successor, KLM UK, later pulled out, the SAS Group was left as the only operator on the route, deploying Braathens Boeing 737s (Airways, Jul/Aug 1995, June 2001 & March 2002) and Wideroe Bombardier DHC-8s (Dash 8s). Airways recently joined Captain Rune Jensen and First Officer Rolf Eivind Oyan on a Widerae flight from Aberdeen-Dyce Airport (IATA: ABZ/ICAO: EGPD) to Stavanger-Sola (IATA: SVG/ICAO: ENZV) in one of the airline's Dash 8 Series 300s. The evening before, the sun had set behind the Grampian Mountains, shrouded in fluffy, crimson clouds. It had probably risen this particular morning as well, but a thick and low cloud cover effectively shielded northeastern Scotland from any sunshine this early autumn Wednesday. By mid-morning, light drizzle had started with a promise of more rain in the west. Indeed, by the time the green-and-white Dash 8 was inbound to Dyce, it was pouring with rain. And it was still raining as the incoming passengers ran across the tarmac to reach cover inside the terminal. However, by boarding time the weather had let up. Still with no sign of the elusive sun, but it was dry―at least for a while.
