Timelessness prevails in what must surely rank as one of Asia's last frontiers―Mongolia, where the horse is still man's best friend. Riding on the top of Asia like a crown, it is landlocked and wedged between Russia and China in a crevice of time. On the final descent into Ulaanbaatar's Buyant-Ukhaa Airport, a tapestry of chocolate-colored hills with a green blanket of vegetation spreads all the way to the horizon. Stark-white gers (tents) and horses provide the only distraction from an otherwise undisturbed serenity.
