ASA was founded in March 1979 in Atlanta by three former Southern Airways executives, George Pickett, Robert Priddy, and John Beiser, who anticipated that deregulation would result in the loss of air service to some southeastern US markets. Using a single 19-passenger de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, ASA began service on June 27, 1979, between Atlanta and Columbus, Georgia. Their idea of a high frequency and direct commuter service, providing maximum feed to trunk carriers at peak times, took off. From a modest start, with 12,000 passengers carried in 1979, the company grew steadily, bolstered by the strong economy in that part of the US and Atlanta's growing importance as a hub. ASA added the 17-seat EMBRAER Bandeirante to its fleet in 1981, and the 48-passenger de Havilland Canada Dash 7 in 1982, the same year that it went public. The following year ASA acquired Southeastern Airlines of Alabama.
