Situated in the Atlantic Ocean, separated some 13mi (21km) from the Rhode Island coast by Block Island Sound and about the same distance from the eastern tip of Long Island, Block Island is small, encompassing an area of only 9.7sq mi (25km2). The island's population is a little more than 1,000, although,this number increases considerably during summer. That's when the pleasant climate draws New Englanders, in particular, who arrive for the duration of the season, or for shorter vacations.
