At one time the mainstay of the country's two major airlines, Philippine Airlines [PAL] and Far Eastern Air Transport Inc [FEATI], and later soldiering on as freight haulers long after their passenger-carrying days had ended, the commercial life of the Douglas DC-3 in the Philippines is drawing to a close. Age and ever escalating operating costs have forced these veterans out of the air, no longer able to earn their keep amidst a world of modern jet transport. With only one example remaining airworthy, the familiar drone of their Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp radial engines may soon fade altogether from Philippine earshot.
