摘要

The determination of fern species by using traditional identification keys is, for non-specialists, a sometimes troublesome subject. We present a simplified identification key for the ferns of Switzerland. This key has the following characteristics: (1) a minimum of technical terms is used, and those used are illustrated in drawings; (2) the key does not include higher taxonomic ranks such as families, thereby directly leading to genera and/or species; (3) it does not provide detailed information such as species description, distribution patterns and habitat preferences; (4) only the extant native species are treated, neophytes and hybrids are excluded. The aim of this new identification key of the 56 Swiss fern species is to simplify the determination of ferns in education, vegetation science and in practical applications such as conservation and field work.
