The influence of electromagnetic stirring and grain refinement on the solidification structure of the 5182 aluminum alloy is studied through thixo-casting of billets of 78 mm diameter with a casting speed of 3 mm/s. The effect of convective flow is studied through different electromagnetic stirring intensities. Grain refiner effect is also taken into account through the addition of Al-5Ti-1B. From the observation of the microstructure it is found that the grain density increases as the stirring intensity increases, with a much more pronounced effect in the case of the grain refined billets. Periodic columnar structures are observed mainly in the non grain refined billets. From thermal investigations, explanations of these observations are proposed which are based on the combination of the nucleation and fragmentation mechanisms and on the growth competition between columnar and equiaxed structures.
