摘要

With the advent of powerful and cheap computers, modelling of solidification processes at the macroscopic scale has become standard practices in industry. New approaches have also been developed recently for the modelling of microstructure and defect formation. The present contribution is a quick overview of the state-of-the-art modelling of aluminium semicontinuous casting processes written for the 40th anniversary of the Research and Development Centre of Hydro Aluminium (formely VAW) in Bonn. It also point out the difficulties and challenges that remain to be solved before a virtual cast house becomes... a reality!
