Metallurgical and processing aspects of the NRC semi-solid casting technology

With the development of squeeze casting, thixoeasting and vacuum pressure die casting it became possible in the last five years to apply light metal pressure castings for safety critical areas of modern vehicles even in large volume production. The newly developed casting processes allow the production of near net shape castings with high integrity, i.e. excellent combination of strength and ductility, which are prerequisites for light weight component design. For most suspension parts a weight saving of around 50% of the replaced steel and iron parts could be achieved. While in Squeeze Casting and Vacuum Pressure Die Casting the die cavity is filled with a fully liquid melt, in Thixocasting the melt is semi-solid and , therefore, a non-newtonian viscous slurry. At the fair GIF A 99 UBE Industries Ltd. introduced a patented new way of semi-solid casting, the New Rheocasting NRC process. This process combines the Squeeze Casting technology with a novel way of slurry making. In the present paper the metallurgical aspects of the NRC process are discussed, and compared with the classical Thixocasting process. The actual shape casting process and the properties of the resulting components shall be presented in a follow-up paper.
