Jim Gillis (Intalco Aluminum Company) was session chairman of the Reduction Technology V Session, which treated especially energy and current efficiency questions. Walker and coworkers [27] dem-onstrated that three Performance criteria are necessary to determine the number of point feeders re-quired in an aluminium reduction cell. These are: acceptable alumi-na dissolution, satisfactory mix-ing, and a satisfactory rate of alu-mina concentration increase after an anode effect. Slow dissolution of agglomerates and a risk of sludge formation is expected to re-sult if significantly larger quan-tities of alumina are added. Criteria proposed for avoiding alumina concentration gradients in the cell do not ensure good alumina dissolution. Laboratory investigations into continuous alumina feeding show that, for alumina to dissolve immediately, extremely low addi-tion rates are required. Based on these results, one continuous feed-er would be required for every 25 to 50 kA of current.
