The most important features of a fully automatic crane are its combination of sensors, crane drive equipment and controls, and in this a crane control system that can work with the widest possible variety of measurement systems is of decisive importance. Path measurement or laser scanning systems provide information about the next position to move to, and the automatic crane itself can respond to three-dimensional coordinates. Thus, at least in part, automatic cranes become `intelligent' components of a material-flow system which can be integrated into complex sequences. Even the surfaces of bulk goods can be scanned for this purpose.
