Most of Brazil's bauxite deposits were discovered in the 1970s, but by the mid-1980s the country reported 2,500 million tons of reserves, accounting for 11% of the world total. In 1993, bauxite reserves were reported to be 2,700 million tons, making Brazil the third largest holder of this mineral commodity (see fig. 1). Only Guinea and Australia had more bauxite, accounting for 24.4% and 19% of the world's reserves respectively. Brazil's bauxite deposits are of the trihydrate type, which can be processed at lower temperatures and pressures than other varieties of the ore, with a consequent processing cost advantage over many of the world's reserves.
