According to Moltech scientists some aspects in aluminium cell operation need to be further improved: Problems in present cell operation 1. Consumable carbon anodes having short life and creating unstable cell operation 2. Anode overvoltage 3. Anode properties 4. Bath chemistry stability 5. Carbon cathode erosion, corrosion and deformation due to cryolite and aluminium attack and sodium penetration 6. Non-wettable carbon cathode surface, requiring a thick pool of aluminium 7. Air oxidation of side walls and of the part of the anode exposed to air and cell gases 8. Low energy efficiency due to large anode-cathode distance 9. Pitch as binder for carbon cell components 10. Pollution during fabrication and disposal of the carbon components and during cell operation 11. Greenhouse gases created during cell operation.
